HORSEBACK RIDING

AN AID TO THE PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY CHALLENGED

THE BENEFITS of horseback riding are as numerous as the types of disabilities and conditions served.  Research shows that students who participate in therapeutic riding can experience physical, emotional, and mental rewards.  Because horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider's body in a manner similar to a human gait, riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance, and muscle strength.  For individuals with mental or emotional disabilities, the unique relationship formed with the horse can lead to increased confidence, patience and self-esteem.  The sense of independence found on horseback benefits all who ride.  The therapeutic qualities of horseback riding are recognized by many medical professionals, including the American Physical Therapy Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

There are numerous opportunities for volunteer service to support FREEDOM FRIENDS. Horse handlers and sidewalkers are needed to assist the students and instructor during the one-hour classes and for helping the students groom and tack their mounts.

Other areas of service are needed that do not require working directly with horses.  These include planning and conducting fund-raising events; recruiting and training volunteers; staff scheduling for classes; medical, therapeutic and legal advisors; public relations; publications; first aid/CPR instructors; and clerical support for all activities.

NARHA OPERATING CENTER

at the
DOUBLE J RANCH

The North American Riding for the Handicapped Association Inc. (NARHA) is a non-profit organization with individual members and operating center members in the U.S. and throughout the world.  The NARHA mission is to promote and support equine-facilitated activities for individuals with disabilities.  Such support includes providing the membership with the standards, accreditation, certification, education resources and published materials they need to fully serve their community.

Nestled in the trees at the Double J Ranch is a 70-ft square barn containing an office, tack room, mounting ramp, and an indoor arena for riding classes during inclement weather. The structure was built specifically to accommodate handicapped riding classes.
